Do you feel exhausted? Are you overwhelmed by your obligations? Do you sometimes feel like you’re going to explode? Many people feel like they’re carrying around a huge weight on their shoulders. It can make you feel frazzled, depressed and desperate for a change.

When you’re always on the go, constantly trying to hit deadlines, and trying to do a million things at once, it puts an awful lot of pressure on you to meet or exceed everybody’s expectations. It’s no wonder you feel so burdened. Add to that the confusion you might feel from having unfinished projects and obligations all swimming around in your head. Not having a clear picture of things you need to get done causes them to expand in urgency and importance, even if they’re only minor projects or quick tasks.

In order for you to see the sun, you’ve got to clear the haze and confusion. If you want to feel like the clouds are parting and the sun is shining again, the first thing to do is unload your burdens. Here’s a strategy for doing this:

1) Say NO — At least for a little while, don’t take on anymore projects for other people, no matter how well-meaning they are. It doesn’t matter how much they beg or how big the guilt trip is that they try to lay on you. Just say this:

“If I say I’ll do this for you, I probably won’t finish it on time because I’m already over-burdened with too many other projects. I would rather not say I’ll do it if I’m not 100% positive I can get it done on time. So, as much as I would love to help you, I’m going to have to pass on this.”

Trust me, people will understand and appreciate your honesty and some will even thank you for NOT saying yes.

2) Make a List — Write down all your current projects, obligations, and deadlines. Often, just putting them all on paper makes the load seem a lighter because you’re not trying to juggle them all in your head. Anytime you’re trying to keep track of too many things in your head, it causes confusion and constantly makes you feel like you’re forgetting something really important. This adds more weight to your burden.

3) Do a Little Every Day — Pick one item off your list and work on it. You can knock out many things in just a few minutes and they’re done forever. Often, we just don’t take the time to make a few phone calls, or do a couple quick and easy tasks. Schedule a time when you will do at least a little work on something from your list. Set a timer and work until the time runs out. Doing as little as 5 or 10 minutes each day can start making you feel so much better about your life, even after just a few days.

You might be amazed at the difference you can make by doing these three things. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by a log-jam of thoughts in your head and once you get things moving again, you don’t have to hold on to them all because you’re doing something about it.
